Ubigi eSIM review: cheap fixed data, plainly sold

Ubigi starts a plan's validity when you arrive in a covered area and gives you six months to activate it. Its store lists one-off, monthly and annual plans in USD.

Ubigi sells data the way a bus ticket is sold. You pick an amount, pay, and it works.

Japan, as a typical order

The plan I'd use as the example is 5 GB for 15 days, $10 (checked November 2, 2026). It is data only. Ubigi's store page, which showed US$ prices on Nov 2, 2026, calls it a one-off plan and says you can top up instantly when the data runs out.

Think of a hypothetical 10-day trip with 5 GB: maps, messaging and a few photo uploads. That fits. A heavier traveler can look at the 25 GB plan, or try the calculator with different numbers.

When the clock starts

Ubigi's help page says the plan activates automatically on arrival in a covered area, and validity starts then. If you're already in a covered area when you buy, it starts immediately. A purchased plan that isn't activated within six months expires.

That is a cleaner promise than Airalo's, whose own help page says some packages start at install. See the Airalo review for that rule. A related help article describes the "profile" itself lasting indefinitely, provided you buy at least one prepaid plan every 18 months, counted from your last use.

One-off, monthly or annual

The store page sells three types. One-off plans are for trips. Monthly plans renew the allowance and the payment every month, with cancellation possible after 3 months. Annual plans take one payment for 12 months, with the allowance renewing monthly. Japan's annual 5 GB a month plan was US$55 on that page.

For most readers on a single trip, one-off is the choice. Monthly and annual suit expats and people who fly often.

The World confusion

Here's a snag. The store has a plan named World, and a separate one named Best World. The World 3 GB, 30-day plan was US$26 on the page. The Best World version of 3 GB for 30 days costs $19. They are not the same product, and the names do little to tell you why. Compare the coverage lists in the plan details before you buy.

Ubigi's store title says it sells data plans in 200+ destinations. If you only visit one country, skip World and buy the local plan. The Japan eSIM comparison shows how local plans line up.

Top-ups, hotspot and calls

Top-ups run in the Ubigi app or at ubigi.me, from any device, per Ubigi's top-up page, even with no data left or no Wi-Fi. The page adds an asterisk: you must be under Ubigi's network coverage.

For tethering, Ubigi's Android article walks through turning on Mobile Hotspot. If the option is greyed out, you may need to register the APN first. I read only the Android article; nothing I opened covers iPhone hotspot.

Calls and texts: Ubigi's help center says its eSIM provides data-only services, with calls and texts left to VoIP apps or your home carrier line. The plans here are data only.

Who it suits

Pick Ubigi for short trips on a budget and a start date that follows your flight. On Europe, Ubigi against Airalo puts the two side by side. eSIM against roaming covers the alternative of using your home carrier. All the plans sit under eSIM plans.

I'd score it 7.5 out of 10. Nobody here has used it, so the score weighs price, the limits Ubigi states and how plainly the terms read. The two World plans hold it back.

7.5/10

Validity starts on arrival, plans are priced in USD on the store, and the same page sells one-off, monthly and annual options. The World range is confusing, and the help pages I read cover Android hotspot only.
