Airalo eSIM review: what you get and where it falls short

Airalo sells local, regional and global eSIMs for 200+ locations, but the day your validity starts changes from package to package. Read that line before you pay.

Airalo calls itself the world's first eSIM store and says over 30 million people choose it (Japan page, read Nov 2, 2026). The catch sits in a help article most people skip.

The validity rule

Airalo's help page "When can I use my eSIM?" (read Nov 2, 2026) says every package has a validity policy, shown in the package details. In most cases the clock starts when the eSIM connects to a supported network in its coverage area. In some cases it starts the moment you install it on your phone.

So installing at home can burn days before you land. The same page tells you to install as early as you like, then read the policy first. Both pieces of advice are Airalo's. Open the package details before you pay.

The Japan plan, as a test case

The plan this review rests on is the Moshi Moshi package: 3 GB for 7 days at $8 (checked November 2, 2026). It is data only. Airalo's Japan page names SoftBank, KDDI, Rakuten as the networks.

That is plenty for maps and messaging over a short city trip. A hypothetical week of video calls would need more. Run your own numbers in the data calculator before choosing.

For heavier use Airalo also sells unlimited Japan packages, from 3 to 30 days. Read the cap, though. Airalo's plan data for the Japan unlimited plan says full speed (up to 20 Mbps) for the first 3 GB each day, then 1 Mbps. Unlimited here means no data ceiling. Speed still drops.

Hotspot, top-ups, renewals

Airalo's tethering page says you can share your connection as long as your device and the network support it. On iPhone, an eSIM that needs a manual APN also needs that APN in the Personal Hotspot field. Airalo's Android steps start with setting an APN. Fiddly, but written down.

On top-ups, the Japan page says "in many cases" you can add a package to an existing eSIM, with options shown before and after purchase. That is not a promise for every plan. It also describes renewals: turn them on and the package renews automatically when 10 percent of the data remains. Check whether that switch is on before you travel.

Voice and SMS exist only when a package includes them. The Airalo plans reviewed here are data only. For calls, use WhatsApp or similar over data.

Coverage beyond one country

Airalo's Japan page says its range spans local, regional and global eSIMs for 200+ locations. Airalo also sells a global package: 20 GB valid for 365 days at $66. A year of validity suits people who cross borders often and use little data. If you only visit one country, a local plan usually fits better. See Airalo against Nomad for a head-to-head.

Who should buy it

Buy Airalo if you want one app for many countries and you will read each package's validity line. Skip it if you want a plan that starts only when you say so. For that, the Nomad review covers a rival whose help page says validity starts only on activation. Ubigi against Airalo covers the price gap in Europe, and our travel eSIM roundup places Airalo among the others. Browse all plans under eSIM plans.

My score is 7.5 out of 10. Nobody here has used Airalo, so the score weighs price, the limits Airalo states and how plainly its terms read. The range earns it most of that. The per-package validity rule takes points off.
