| Product | Best for | Price | The deciding fact, and the catch | Link |

For a short trip, validity is easy. The question is gigabytes, and whether "unlimited" is worth paying extra for.
A hypothetical week in Japan with maps, messaging and a few photos uploaded fits in 3 GB. The same week with video calls home doesn't. Pick by the data you'd burn, then check the catch.
A fixed plan for light users
Airalo's Moshi Moshi plan is 3 GB for 7 days at $8, on SoftBank, KDDI, Rakuten (checked November 2, 2026). It is data only. The Japan page I read doesn't mention hotspot.
For US trips, aloSIM's plan gives 10 GB for 7 days at $21.50. Its page lists hotspot and tethering as yes, a phone number included with purchase, and data top-ups as available. The page says the plan connects on arrival.
Ten gigabytes in a week is generous. My guess, not a measurement: that is enough to tether a laptop for a day of work and still have data left.
Unlimited, with strings
Holafly's Thailand plan runs 5 days at $20.50. Holafly's page says the plan starts when the eSIM connects to a supported network, not when you buy it. Hotspot is limited to 1 GB per day. Holafly also says an operator's fair usage policy can, in rare cases, slow your speed for up to one day. It's data only, with no local number.
Maya's 7-day plan is $19.99. Maya's page calls it unlimited with "no caps, no throttling" and lists hotspot as included. That is Maya's claim. The page also says the plan auto-renews while Travel Mode is on, so turn it off at the end.
If one phone does everything, either unlimited plan removes the math. If a laptop is involved, I'd take Maya's hotspot wording or aloSIM's fixed 10 GB over Holafly's 1 GB a day.
What I'd buy
Light user, one country: the Airalo fixed plan. At $8 it costs less than Maya's $19.99 or Holafly's $20.50, though those cover other places.
Heavy user or tethering: Maya's 7-day plan, with the renewal switch watched.
Not sure how much you'd use? The trip calculator prices a week from your own gigabyte guess. The eSIM catalog lists the rest.
Two pieces help with the decision. Unlimited or fixed data explains where unlimited plans slow down. For a country-specific pick, read the Japan comparison, and the best travel eSIMs roundup covers longer trips.
