Using a travel eSIM in mainland China

Airalo says its eSIMs with China coverage route traffic outside the Great Firewall, so Google and WhatsApp work without a VPN. That is Airalo's claim. Nobody here tested it.

China is a destination where an eSIM may change what you can reach, not only what you pay. Phones on local networks hit the Great Firewall. A travel eSIM may not.

Nobody tested this for this page. What follows is Airalo's published position, labeled as such.

What Airalo says

Airalo's help article lists services "generally inaccessible on local networks": Google (including Gmail and Maps), Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and WhatsApp. It adds that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Midjourney are blocked by the firewall or geoblocked by their makers.

Its fix is routing. Airalo says its eSIM "uses international roaming data routing", so traffic goes through gateways outside mainland China and the device "appears as an international roaming user". Airalo concludes a VPN is not required on its China eSIM, its Regional Asia eSIM or its Global eSIM.

Two limits sit in Airalo's own text. First, the access holds "as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)". Hotel Wi-Fi is still local. Second, the list of blocked AI tools suggests an eSIM won't unblock services that refuse to serve China.

This is a vendor claim. I have no independent test of it to cite.

Which plan

Airalo's China page lists a local plan and names China Unicom as its network. The page showed euros only when I read it: 3 days unlimited at EUR 11.00, 7 days at EUR 25.00, 30 days at EUR 64.00. The page's plan data gives the 3-day unlimited pack 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. I couldn't confirm the same figure for every China tier, so check the plan you pick.

Airalo's Global plan counts too: the help article names the Global eSIM next to the China one. The 3 GB, 30-day Global plan is $24 (checked November 2, 2026), data only. If you're also visiting other countries, that one install covers the whole trip.

Fixed data goes quickly if maps and messaging are your only apps. Three gigabytes for a short stay is workable. For a longer one, the unlimited China plan avoids the arithmetic, and the calculator can help: 3 GB for 10 days in China.

Before you fly

  • Check your phone is eSIM-capable and unlocked. Airalo's page notes carrier-locked phones can't use it.
  • Airalo says you can install the eSIM before you arrive, as long as you have a stable internet connection. Do it at home on Wi-Fi.
  • Keep a second route to home. A data-only eSIM won't give you a number for calls or texts.
  • Treat the eSIM claim as untested for your apps. Have an offline map saved.

I'd buy Airalo's Global plan only if China is one stop of several. For China alone, the local plan's unlimited tiers skip the gigabyte arithmetic. I'd check the daily full-speed figure for the exact tier before buying; the 3-day pack's data says 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps.
